How to Edit a Picture in Photoshop (Any Version)

If you've ever had a great photo spoiled by camera flash induced red eyes, you're not alone. But there's a pretty simple solution for this all too common scenario. Learn how to edit a picture in Photoshop, any version, to remedy this common problem.

  1. First: Initiate image editing

Begin by opening the image in Photoshop. Proceed to Image > Duplicate, then close the original image. For Photoshop 6 and older editions, proceed to View > New View. If you've got the software version 7, proceed instead to Window > Documents > New Window to open up a replicated window with the identical image.

  2. Second: Zoom in

In one of the windows, use zoom to hone in on your subject's red eyes, and set the remaining window at 100% view. Configure this pair of windows in such a way that they can be viewed simultaneously, both the zoomed and 100% perspectives.

  3. Third: Layer with color

Using the eyedropper tool, select a hue from the eye's iris. This shade should be rather gray, tinted with some of the eye's color. Now, create a new layer by painting on top of the reddened eye. avoiding the eyelid area.

  4. Fourth: Make refinements

Proceed to Filters > Blur > Gaussian. Use approximately a single pixel of blur in order to achieve softer edges. Choose the Saturation function to set the layer blend and remove the reddening but not any highlights. This keeps the eyes from appearing a flat, hollow gray. In case you get this undesirable result, repeat the process but instead select Hue for the blend setting. This infuses color and also maintains highlights. Minimize the Hue opacity in case it is too intense.

  5. Fifth: Complete the process

Once you're satisfied with the outcome, then merge the additional layers down.
