How to Edit a Picture in Photoshop Elements

Don't let red-eye caused by camera flash wreck an otherwise awesome photo. Thanks to photo-editing programs like Photoshop, you can banish red eyes and achieve all kinds of special effects. Once you know how to edit a picture in Photoshop Elements using their special red-eye tool, you can salvage photos that might have been headed for the trash bin or delete button.

First: Image alignment

Open the image and then open a duplicate window by proceeding to View > New View. Now focus on the subject's eyes by zooming in on one of these windows. Align the windows in order to view both images at once - the zoom image along with the 100% view.

Second: The layered look

Proceed to Window > Show Layers if needed in order to view the palette of layers. Then click on "create new layer" which you'll find toward the base of the palette.

Third: The best blend

Find the blending menu toward the top of the palette. Switch the blending option for your new layer by selecting the Color setting. In the tool area, select the foreground color swatch and choose an eye color alternative to replace the redness.

Fourth: The right brush

Pick the paintbrush from the options in the tool box. Select a soft-edged brush that is a bit smaller in comparison to the size of the red eyes. Select an opacity setting of around 30%.

Fifth: A painterly touch

Paint slowly and steadily on top of the reddened eyes, taking care to avoid covering the eyelids or eye whites. For greater control, you can zoom in further.
